Co. Cavan Winter League, 3rd Leg

The third and final leg of the annual winter league was held at Drumgoon recently. The event was hosted by the local club Drumlin AC. The good weather was welcomed by the athletes. On a day that the overall winter league results were to be decided, the flat fast paced course provided some thrilling races and tight finishes.

Seniors

In the senior men’s 6km race Shercock’s Noel Carroll (left) produced another fine display of front running to secure first place and along with his two previous wins he took the winter league title. Laragh’s Martin Fulton once more had to settle with the runner up position and took second place in the overall standings while Baileborough’s Briain O'Dowd third consecutive third place finish ensured him the bronze medal overall. The team honors on the day went to Shercock followed closely by Annalee. After the race the overall team title was won by the Shercock.

In the ladies 2km event, Annalee’s Louise Reilly once more lead from the gun winning the race on the day. The clash for second was once again between Baileboro’s Emily Meehan and Shercock’s Karen Ruxton. Meehan finished well to place second with Ruxton having to settle for third. Following the day’s race the winter league title was won by Karen Ruxton with Siobhan Smith of Innyvale awarded the silver. Another team win by Annalee ensured they the overall gold medalists.

Masters

The Masters Men’s race was run alongside Senior Men. Colin Watterson Shercock (left) finished strongly winning the race and winning his first winter league title. Colin’s club mate John Joe Rodgers improved a place from his previous outing to finish second with Annalee’s Sean O’ Reilly behind him in third. After the scores were checked there was a tie for second place between Laragh’s Michael Smith and Shercock’s Eamonn Gargan, while Nicolas Comey of Baileboro was the recipient of the bronze medal position.

A highly contested team race saw Shercock secure the win along with the overall title, with Annalee placing second and Laragh third.

The Ladies Masters was also run in conjunction with the Senior Event. Joan Galligan of Team P Elliot was the winner after a hard fought race. Evelyn O’ Reilly finished strongly taking second with Shercock’s Ruth McCreery in third. Galligan’s win ensured her the overall gold medal with O’Reilly taking the silver and Team P Elliot’s Michelle Mutton being awarded the bronze.

The team race was contested by Team P Elliot, Shercock and Annalee who respectively took first second and third. However the overall title positions were reversed with the Annalee Ladies taking the gold with Team P Elliot settling for the silver.
