2006 Cross Country Reports

Previous Years: 2004 2005

AAI Juvenile Even Ages Cross Country Championships - Just three athletes from the club made the journey to Dungarvan for the national juvenile cross country championships on November 26th. Niall Clerkin was the highest placed of the trio, coming in 19th place in the boys under 12 1000m. Edel Kieran was 37th in the girls under 12 1000m and Celine Clerkin was 39th in the girls under 14 1200m.

November 12th - Cavan Senior Cross Country Championships

The annual county senior cross country championships were held today on Sean O'Reilly's farm where the combination of a tough course and heavy underfoot conditions provided a stern test for the twenty-one athletes who turned out to contest the men's and women's events. The Shercock men's team were missing a number of key runners from last year's winning quartet however the side was boosted by the presence of the three McCarey brothers - Brian, Conor and John, who made a good impression on their first outing in the Shercock vest. In the absence of defending champion Noel Carroll, it was left up to Bailieborough's Martin Fulton and Annalee's Fionan O'Reilly to battle it out for the men's 10km title. After running neck and neck for the opening laps, Fulton made a decisive move with 3km to go and pulled a clear lead over his younger challenger which he extended all the way to the finish line. The popular win was a just reward for the perseverance of the Bailieboro athlete who had finished in the runner-up position on five previous occasions. Further down the field the battle for team honours proved a close affair as the Shercock squad packed well behind Brian McCarey to challenge Bailieboro and Annalee for the title. After a cautious start Brian and his brother John moved up through the field in the company of team mate Michael Muldoon. Michael dropped back as the race moved into the closing stages, however the second Shercock pairing of John Joe Rogers and Conor McCarey produced a strong run over the closing three laps and gained valuable points for the club. In the end Bailiboro, with three finishers in the top four, proved too strong and ran out deserved winners while Shercock, anchored by veteran Eamonn Gargan, held off the challenge of Annalee to secure the silver medals. Overall the day belonged to Bailieboro AC, who won all four individual and team titles on offer.

Shercock's Brian McCarey, Michael Muldoon and John McCarey keep close order on the opening lap.

Brian McCarey had pulled clear into fifth position by the half-way point, a position which he held all the way to the finish line.

John McCarey pulled away from team-mate Michael Muldoon on the third lap and ran on strongly to finish sixth.

November 5th - Albert Runs The New York Marathon

Shercock master athlete Albert Eakins (left) fulfilled a long held ambition to run the New York marathon today, having secured a place in the event in a lottery held earlier this year. Albert rolled back the year's in the first half of the race, which he covered in a highly respectable time of 1 hour and 32 minutes. The fast early pace took its toll, however and he slowed significantly in the second half of the race as he reached his limit on the streets of the Big Apple. Digging deep into his years of experience at the distance, Albert persevered through the dreaded wall and crossed the finish line in 18,729th position in a field of 38,000. With a finishing time of 4:21, Albert did well to finish in the top half of the field and will undoubtedly be looking forward to running over somewhat shorter distances in the near future.

November 4th - Ulster & NI Even Ages Cross Country Championships in Ballyclare

Edel Kiernan produced a great run to finish third in the under 12 1000m in Ballyclare.

Also impressing for Shercock was Niall Clerkin who finished third in the boys under 12 event.

Celine Clerkin also ran well to finish sixth in the under 14 1200m.

Well done to our cross country runners young and old who excelled at the county cross country championships at the weekend. There were further outstanding winning performances by Edel Kiernan in the under 12 1000m and Barry Cooney in the under 14 1500m. Paul Fitzpatrick led home a Shercock hat-trick in the under 18 5000m in which Luke O'Brien was second and a returned-to-form Colm Smith was third. With team mate Ciaran Ward finishing fifth there was a comfortable team win for the quartet. Also impressing were the Shercock Men's Masters team who were led home by John Joe Rogers in second place and a resurgent Eamonn Gargan in third. With Albert Eakins and Colin Watterson also finishing well up the field the team took top honours.

Sep 30th - Cavan Uneven Ages & Novice Cross Country

Shercock hosted the first stage of the county cross country championships on the local pitch & putt course today. It was the first time that a competition had been held on the course and it suffered a severe test as torrential rain saturated the ground and left athletes and spectators soaked to the skin. The course held up well to the challenge with only minor areas cutting up at the corners. Despite the weather there were some exciting races and some encouraging individual performances by the club's cross country specialists. Colin Watterson produced a great run over a grueling 6000m to hold off the challenge of Bailieboro's Michael Meehan and win the men's novice title. There were further impressive individual wins by Lisa Clerkin (left) in the girls under 17 2000m and Barry Cooney in the under 13 1200m.

Celine Clerkin and Drumlin's Catriona Mullen had a strong head to head battle in the under 15 1500m with Mullen showing greater strength in the closing stages to win the title. Paul Fitzpatrick, likewise, kept close order with Annalee's Fionan O'Reilly for the entire length of the under 19 6000m (right), finally finishing in second place as O'Reilly pulled away at the finish. Luke O'Brien also ran well to finish third and with team mates James Muldoon and Ciaran Ward combining to win team honours for Shercock.

April 30th - Cavan Road Championships

Noel Carroll and Fiona Murray Lead Shercock to McCormack Cup Win

The annual Cavan road championships were held in good conditions in Bailieborough today when Shercock went in search of their ninth successive win in the McCormack Cup. The 3km course included a taxing uphill climb of over a kilometer which provided a stern test for the competitors in the men's 10km. Noel Carroll has shown strong form throughout the year and went into the race as clear favourite. Bailieborough's Martin Fulton kept close order for the first lap however when Noel injected some pace on the second lap he was unable to respond and the Shercock man pulled out a gap which he maintained all the way to the finish for a comprehensive win. Annalee's Fionan O'Reilly held off a late challenge from Bailieborough's Briain O'Dowd to take the bronze medal. Luke O'Brien was next home for Shercock in sixth place and the scoring quartet was completed by Paul Fitzpatrick (8th) and James Muldoon (9th). Bailieborough packed well to take the team honours with Shercock second.

The ladies race saw a positive return to form by Fiona Murray who made light of the demanding course as she pulled away from the rest of the field from the start and in the end was a comfortable winner of the title. Karen Ruxton also enjoyed a good race to take the bronze medal while Lisa Clerkin produced a great effort in her first road championship as she finished well up the field and helped secure a team win for Shercock ahead of the hosts Bailieborough. The masters 3km races were run in tandem with the women's race and in the men's event it was the experienced pairing of John Joe Rogers and Albert Eakins who moved straight to the front with John Joe looking particularly impressive as he shook off the effects of an overnight illness to run out a convincing winner of the master's title. Albert held off a late challenge from Annalee's Sean O'Reilly to take silver and the Shercock team secured gold once again thanks to the efforts of Phil Ward as third scorer. Newcomer Catriona Rice proved to be a surprise package for Shercock in the women's masters 3km as she led home team mates Catherine Magarahan and Gene Cunningham to team gold ahead of Annalee AC. With strong team and individual performances across all four scoring events, Shercock were clear winners of the McCormack Cup which was accepted on behalf of the club by women's champion Fiona Murray.

The team finished just outside the medals in fourth place. Albert and John Joe had also traveled to Cork for the AAI Masters championships where they acquitted themselves well with John Joe finishing 77th and Albert 79th.

January 28th - Cavan Senior Cross Country Championships

The county senior cross country championships were held today on a dry but hilly course on Sean O'Reilly's farm just outside Cavan town. The ladies race featured a very large entry with six teams completing the course. Louise Reilly (Annalee) led from start to finish to win her fourth successive county title. Fiona Murray was the top placed Shercock runner, finishing just outside the medals in fourth place. Karen Ruxton was next home for the club and Gene Cunningham completed the scoring trio with a strong run which left the women's team in second place behind Annalee and just one point clear of third placed Bailieborough. The Shercock B team finished outside the medals despite positive runs by Mary Muldoon, Eileen McGuinness and Ruth McCreery.

The men's race saw a change at the top of Cavan distance running as three time winner Sean Smith took early retirement, guaranteeing that there would be a new name on the championships cup this year. Noel Carroll kept close order with Bailieborough's Martin Fulton on the opening lap however he soon took the lead and opened up a gap which he lengthened all the way to the finish to win the title (left). An absorbing battle for third place went on behind Fulton as Paul Fitzpatrick, Briain O'Dowd (Bailieborough) and Fionan O'Reilly (Annalee) jockeyed for position. Each took it in turn to occupy third place during the 10km journey however it was a re-surgent Briain O'Dowd who came back into contention on the final lap and secured third place for Bailieborough. Paul Fitzpatrick, who was on the Shercock B team, was the surprise of the day as he finished strongly in fifth place, ahead of most of the Shercock A team. Peter and James Muldoon held off the challenge of Philip Smith (Bailieborough) to occupy the next two places while Luke O'Brien completed a solo run in ninth place to finish the scoring for the Shercock A team who won the team title from Bailieborough. John Joe Rogers showed a good return to form as he crossed the line next for the club's B team and he was helped by Albert Eakins and Noel Ruxton to complete the scoring and take third place from Annalee AC. The three medal winning teams are pictured above - front row: Shercock B, 3rd, middle row: Bailieborough, 2nd, and back row Shercock A, 1st.

The overall club championship competition this year was marred by acrimonious disputes at county board meetings which saw nearly as many results determined at board level as on the field of competition. In the end Shercock emerged as the leading club at the senior championships, however Annalee entered the event with a five point cushion and the net result was a tie between the two clubs, for the first time in the history of the competition.

Louise Reilly (Annalee AC) won the ladies title for the fourth year in a row.

Fiona Murray was Shercock's first finisher in fourth place. Karen Ruxton was next to cross the line for Shercock.

Noel Carroll pulls away from Bailieborough's Martin Fulton on the second lap. Paul Fitzpatrick was the surprise second finisher for Shercock in fifth place. The overall club championship trophy was shared between Shercock and Annalee following a tie on points.

January 22nd - All Ireland B Cross Country & Inter-County Relays

A dry course and perfect weather conditions made for an enjoyable athletics outing to Athlone for the B cross country championships and inter county relays. Fiona Murray (left) had a great run in the under 19 3500m, coming up the field from eighth at the halfway point to finish with a sprint which saw her cross the line in fifth position. A strong Shercock team went in search of medals in the under 17 3000m and were not disappointed as following a conservative start, Luke O'Brien and Paul Fitzpatrick moved into the top ten on the closing lap and won individual medals when finishing 8th and 10th respectively. Not far behind was Colm Smith who made a positive return to competition with a 13th place finish to help the team cause. Kevin Ruxton and Ciaran Ward struggled towards the back of the large field however when the points were totaled Shercock emerged in the silver medal position. Aodaghan O'Reilly (Annalee AC) combined with the Shercock quintet to form a Cavan county team and with a good finish in 24th place secured the bronze medals for the county.

Inter-county relays: Cavan fielded teams in all four of the inter-county cross country relays which were limited to the under 12 and under 14 age groups. First into action were the girls under 12 team and following a positive start by Orlaith Smith, Barbara Ward took the baton in fifth place and produced a strong run to close down the gap to third place. Edel Kiernan put in a very spirited leg to keep Cavan in the medal hunt and passed to Eadaoin O'Reilly who held off a strong challenge from Offaly to secure the team bronze for the county. The boys under 12 team were next up and despite a positive run by Barry Cooney, Tadhg McGahern, Niall Clerkin and Adrian Smith they finished outside the medals in fifth place. Celine Clerkin put in a good run on the opening leg of the under 14 relay and combined with team mates Catriona Mullen, Keava Galligan and Geraldine Sheridan to put Cavan in fifth place once again at the finish. The boys under 14 team had a positive start with Nigel Farelly putting them within range of the medals with a strong opening run. Niall Comey took the baton in fifth place and made great progress in the run in to the change zone, moving up to third place. Francis Moore held the position before a strong finishing lap by Cian O'Reilly made certain of the bronze medals for the Cavan team.

January 21st - Ulster Junior & Masters Cross Country Championships

A quartet of  masters cross country runners broke new ground for Shercock when they became the first team from the club to compete in the Ulster masters championship which was held today in Bangor. In the end they were unable to break into the medals in a highly competitive event, however they gave a good account of themselves with John Joe Rogers leading the team home in 68th, followed by Albert Eakins (80th), Colin Watterson (101st) and Eamonn Gargan (105th). Noel Carroll took part in the Junior 10km event, which was not an age group competition but was based on the old idea of junior as a step above novice. Noel had a positive run, finishing well up the field in 14th place. The race was won impressively by Glaslough Harrier Patrick Cassidy.
