ENDURANCE 2010
November 28th - Cavan County Team Perform Well in National Inter-county Championships |
Fionan O'Reilly led the team out over the opening laps with Ouray McBride in close pursuit. By the third lap of the five lap race Noel Carroll (left) had joined the pair and pushed on to move up the field in the closing stages to finish first of the Cavan men in 47th position with McBride hot on his heels just one place behind. O'Reilly was next across the line in 56th place followed by Paul Fitzpatrick (68th), Martin Fulton (85th), Darren Hand (86th), Philip Smith (89th) and Sean McDaid (90th). This left Cavan in seventh place overall in the inter-county competition and winners of Grade C, as the only county in the grade to finish a full team. The result represented a solid performance by all eight runners who successfully negotiated a challenging race under very demanding conditions. |
November 14th - Cavan Winter League Final |
Shercock Win 2010 Winter League
Breffni Park may have been fog bound today for the final leg of the Cavan Winter League, however the weather could not dampen the spirits of the huge contingent of Shercock athletes who turned out to support the club's challenge for the 2010 Winter League title. Shercock had won the opening legs in Shercock and Bailieborough and carried a 30 point cushion to the final in Breffni Park where host club Annalee provided the greatest obstacle to Shercock's title ambitions. From the first race of the day Shercock were to the fore, packing well in the senior and masters categories to challenge for individual and team titles. Then the action switched to the juvenile distances where the club's youngest athletes led by example with a series of outstanding individual and team winning performances. In the end the 30 point lead proved immaterial as Shercock notched up an impressive total of 108 points across all the age groups - a new record for a single league leg - completing a hat trick of three clear wins over the three stages of the competition. When the points were totalled, Shercock had achieved a new record overall score of 312 points, 50 points clear of second placed Annalee AC (262). innyvale were third (106) followed by Bailieborough (47) and Laragh (26). There was a poignant moment at the start of the men's race in Cavan when the athletes observed a minute's silence in memory of Shercock club member Michael Muldoon and Joseph Fulton, brother of Martin Fulton, Bailieborough AC, both of whem died tragically recently.

November 13th - Ulster Rising Stars Squad The fourth gathering of the Rising Stars Squad for the South Ulster region took place in Shercock today. 39 young athletes in the 12 to 15 age group enjoyed a varied session of sprints and jumps under the guidance of Athletics Ireland RDO Eamon Harvey assisted by coaches Craig Lynch (Shercock AC), James Ruxton (Shercock AC) and Aiden Watters (Annalee AC). |
Michael Muldoon 1985 - 2010
Michael Muldoon died tragically on November 1st. Michael was an outstanding club member who played a key role as captain of the Shercock cross country team from 2001 to 2004. An enthusiastic athlete always ready to take on a new challenge, Michael led by example as a good captain does, leading both Shercock and Cavan teams to success in cross country and racewalking. Michael was greatly admired by his fellow club members, who always looked to him for leadership, and by his coaches, who could always rely on him both as an individual and as a team member. Michael will be greatly missed by his friends in Shercock AC and by his many friends throughout the sport of athletics. May he rest in peace.

October 25th - Marathon Success for Brian McCarey & Team |
|
Brian McCarey had an outstanding run in the Dublin City Marathon today, covering the distance in a new personal best time and club record of 2:44:19. This was a big improvement on his own club record of 2:52 set in 2008. Brian also finished well up the field, coming home 46th in the national championships. Also running well in Dublin was new Shercock club member Dessie Duffy, who covered the course in a useful 2:55:09 while Brian's brother Conor followed close behind with a finish time of 2:59:18. There was further cause for celebration for Shercock when remaining team members Michael Shekleton and Niall Reilly successfully completed the course. Niall was first home of the pair in a time of 3:50:03 while Michael crossed the line in 4:48:42. This year was the first time that Shercock has fielded a team in the national marathon championships and it was great to see all five entrants successfully make it to the finish. The team did very well - finishing fourteenth out of twenty eight clubs in the men's competition. |

Congratulations to 2010 Ulster Cross Country Champions Leanne Kiernan and Aine Corcoran!
The first race on the card was the girls under 10 600m and it was our own Aine Corcoran who stormed into the lead from the whistle and made the race her own as she pulled clear of the field and ran home a convincing winner. It was a great achievement for Aine in her first cross country race at this level and she was followed home by fast-finishing clubmate Grace Kieran who also ran extremely well to finish fifth. The Shercock team finished in second place following strong runs by Emma Glynn, Clare Kelly and Aine Corbally who were delighted with their first Ulster cross country medals. Leanne Kiernan powered into the lead at the start of the under 12 2000m (above) but was soon overtaken and was lying in fifth place as the race entered its final lap. Leanne then produced an outstanding run as she overtook the leaders and sprinted home to win her second Ulster cross country title - having won the under 11 championship last year. Oisin McEntee made a determined start to the under 10 600m but tripped up and was badly spiked. Showing great courage and determination he picked himself up and ran on gamely to the finish, crossing the line in ninth place. Barry Kieran also recovered from a spiking in the under 14 race to come back and finish in fourteenth place while clubmates Garry Marron and Liam Og Murray finished strongly further down the field. Alan Kieran enjoyed his first cross country race in the Ulster championships, keeping an even pace throughout to finish in 14th place in the under 14 3000m, while clubmate Jack Kelly also gave a good account of himself finishing 53rd in the same race. Jess Drohan coped well with the worsening conditions when finishing fourteenth in the under 16 4000m, as did team mate Edel Kieran just a few places behind. Niall Clerkin kept with the leaders for the opening lap of the under 16 4000m and found himself lying twelfth as the race entered the final lap, a position he fought to hold all the way to the finish line. Pauric Donagh struggled to make up ground following an unscheduled off course diversion at the start, however he went on to finish strongly in 31st place. Catherina Mullen returned from her university course in England for the first time this weekend and had a run out in the senior women's 5000m in Jordanstown. Catherina stayed with the leaders for the first lap before they pulled away leaving her in a battle for the minor places. Running a steady race over the closing stages she finished well in seventh place. Catherina's next outing will be in the national junior championships in Derry at the end of November. |

| October 9th - Cavan Cross Country - Juvenile, Novice & Masters | |
After the positive team effort in the winter league the previous week, it was a day for the Shercock distance specialists to stretch their legs as they prepared for the Ulster championships. Caroline Mullen came into her own as she came home a convincing winner of the Novice Womens 3k (left). Also among the leading performers on the day was Niall Clerkin who made light of the 4km distance to win the under 16 championship by a large margin, though club mate Padraig Donagh put in a great run on the final lap to secure second place. In the under 16 girls 4km Jess Drohan had a long battle with home favourite Aideen Kiernan (Innyvale AC), finally gaining the lead on the last lap to secure the win with club mate Edel Kierand coming home third. Barry Kiernan made a great surge on the last lap to take the lead in the under 12 2km race and held off a late challenge to secure the win. Earlier Aine Corcoran was a runaway runner of the under 10 600m while at the other end of the age spectrum James Treanor had to settle for second after a tough duel with Andrew O'Brien (Annalee) in the under 18 6km. Full results will be posted in the results section when they become available. |

| March 27th - James Treanor was in action today at the Dudince Racewalk Meet in Slovakia, competing in the Youth (under 18) 10km walk. James, who had qualified for the European Youth Olympics in his first 10km walk three weeks ago, was hoping to further improve his personal best and dip under the 46 minute mark for the distance. Racing even paced splits in the opening 5km, he went through the halfway point in 23 minutes and lying in second place of the fourteen strong field, which was made up of walkers largely from the Eastern European states. James pace dropped in the closing stages however a strong surge at the end saw him complete the final kilometer in 4:30 minutes, crossing the line in second place in 46:06 mintes, just outside his target time of 46 minutes, but a significant improvement on his previous personal best of 46:27 set in the Isle of Man. The race was won by Hungarian Serb Micklos (45:17), with James second while third place went to Latvian Gerins Valters (47:51). The result is a timely boost for the sixteen year old who can now prepare with confidence for the Youth Olympics in Moscow in May. |
March 13th - Weekend Roundup Noel Carroll had one of his best runs over the country to date when he powered through the closing stages of the Irish Univerities Championships in Cork to finish in eighth place on Saturday. Noel held back during the early stages and was lying 15th at the halfway point, however he made a series of attacks over the closing kilometers and moved up to a group of three athletes battling for sixth place. Despite losing out in the sprint finish, Noel was justifiably delighted with his position, which made him second finisher for the University of Ulster, helping the team to the silver medals behind DCU. This brings Noel's cross country season to a conclusion and he now intends to prepare for the upcoming track season when he intends to tackle the 5000m. New Coaches: Congratulations to three new coaches from the club - Niamh Lynch, Annmarie Burns and Maeve Cassidy, who completed the Assistant Coaching Course which was held in Shercock on Saturday under the direction of Athletics Ireland Regional Development Officer Eamon Harvey. |

James kept a very even pace over the first 9km of the race, sticking closely to his raceplan, and then powered home on the closing lap to dip inside 46:30 at the finish. After such a promising debut at 10km, James can look forward to reducing his time further over the coming months as he prepares for the big day in Moscow. There was further cause for celebration for the Irish racewalk contingent in the Isle of Man when Kerry's Emma Prendeville also qualified for the Youth Olympics with an impressive performance in the 5km event.
