The Story of our Tartan Track Project

In 2009 Shercock AC converted the existing cinder track (laid 2000) to a state of the art tartan track (top)
March 2009: Contracts are signed for the new tartan track in Shercock, which will replace the existing cinder track. Final Training Session - Coach John McGeever points the way ahead to the juvenile squad as they prepare to train on the old cinder track for the last time.
April 5th - Final Competition - Pauric Donagh on his way to winning the under 14 800m at the Cavan Spring League, the final competition to be held on the old cinder track.
April 6th - the diggers move in to dig up the old track.
April 15th - The new long jump pit under construction in the south D.
April 23rd - The Macadam basecourse being laid.
April 24th - The Macadam wearing course is laid over the basecourse.
May 5th - Irish Sports Surfaces arrive on site with the materials for the polymer track surface.
May 7th - The new long jump, pole vault and javelin runways on the south D receive the base layer of crumb rubber. The black resin bound surface looks just like macadam before it receives its red topcoat.
May 12th - The polymer base on the main sprint straight nears completion.
June 1st - An Taoiseach Brian Cowen is welcomed on his visit to the track development at Shercock Athletic Club by club secretary John McGeever and local councillor Francis McDermott (FF). Mr. Cowen was generous in his praise of the work under way on the new track and congratulated the club on their ongoing successes at local, national and international level.
June 8th - The first layer of the red topcoat is sprayed onto the recently completed basecourse.
June 9th - the north bend receives its second topcoat.
June 15th - Setting out the lane markings on the south bend.
June 16th - Line marking in progress.
June 20th - The public address system is installed by Peconic Electrical
Autumn 2009 - The completed track plays host to a squad day for Ulster athletics.
