February 4th - Irish Universities Indoor Championships

Silver for Craig Lynch and James Treanor, Bronze for Matthew O'Reilly in Universities Championships

The Irish Universities Indoor Championships were held today in Nenagh, providing Craig Lynch with his first opportunity to test his form over 400m in 2012. Having won his heat despite an unfavourable draw in lane 1, the Dublin City University student found himself with a lot more room to manoeuvre in the final when he was drawn in lane four. Craig made the best of the outside lane to take the lead at the break, closely followed by Barry Upton and Thomas Barr. Leading around the final bend, Craig looked like he had done enough to win however the fast finishing Thomas Barr closed him down from the outside and held the running line to take the gold. Craig was next across the line followed by Upton in third place.

James Treanor (left) also represented Dublin City University when he lined out for the 2000m racewalk, in which he faced opposition from defending champion Cian McMenamin from the University of Limerick and Niall Prendeville from UCC. James put in a very fast opening kilometer as he tried to stay on terms with raceleader McMenamin, however the Limerick student pulled away over the next kilometer to win convincingly. James came under pressure from Prendeville in the closing stages but held on to secure the silver medal, setting a personal best and new club record time of 8:19 in the process.

Shot Putter Matthew O'Reilly made a very positive start to 2012 with a throw of 12.34m to finish in third place in Nenagh. This was very close to his personal best and club record of 12.48m and suggests that the Carlow IT student may break new ground in his trademark event in the year ahead.

The athletes will next be in action at the Irish Senior Indoor Championships in Belfast's Odyssey Arena on February 11th.

Meanwhile hammer thrower James Williams had an unseasonal early start to 2012 when he took part in the Throws event at Belfast's Mary Peter's Track on Saturday. James threw an excellent distance of 48.30m to win the 5kg category - a full kilogram heavier than his competition weight as an under 16 athlete in 2012.

January 22nd - AAI Junior Indoor Championships

Treanor Takes Silver in Close Fought Contest

The AAI Junior Indoor Championships were held today in Nenagh.

One of the best races of the day came in the men’s walk with two athletes crossing the line practically together. James Treanor (Shercock AC) and Evan Lynch (Clonmel AC) traded places several times during their 3,000m race with Treanor entering the finish straight on course for a good win. However, Lynch had other ideas and he finished the fastest to edge ahead on the line for an excellent win in a time of 12:49.43 to Treanor’s 12:49.88. James was satisfied with his time which represented a significant improvement on his 2011 performance and is now looking forward to representing his college, DCU, at the Irish Universities Indoor Championships before competing over 5km at the Irish Senior Indoor Championships in Belfast on February 12th.

Also performing well on the indoor track circuit this weekend was Shercock's Edel Kieran who travelled to Glasgow to compete in the Scottish Open Championships. In her first major race over 400m indoors, Edel produced a great effort to finish third of her under 18 age group and as ninth finisher overall in the senior women's category, recording a useful time of 62.8s in the process.

GOAL Mile

Well done and thank you to everyone who turned out to support the GOAL Mile at the track on Saint Stephen's Day. A total of 795 euros was raised for the third world relief organisation.

January 7th - Celtic International Cross Country, Edinburgh

Catherina Mullen was in action in Scotland today where she competed on the Ulster team in the u23 Celtic Cross Country International. Running in the pack for the first 2km, Catherina dropped back in the closing stages of the the 5km event but still finished well in 12th place overall and scored as the second finisher for her Ulster team which finished in fourth place. Catherina is pictured above with her Ulster u23 team mates Rachel Gibson and Eimear Black.

Catherina's plans now focus on the English universities championships in four weeks time when she hopes to show further improvements in form with the aim of competing over 5000m on the track in the summer.

Jessica Takes Bronze in Ulster Junior Championships

Jessica Drohan had a good run in Scotstown on Sunday, finishing third in the Ulster Junior Championship, which should stand her in good stead for the upcoming schools championships. In the masters championship John Joe Rogers flew the flag for Shercock and finished well in tenth place in the M50 category. Also running well over the country this weekend were Shercock juveniles Oisin McEntee and Sean Clarke who competed in the juvenile programme in Scots town and finished first and second in their age group. Shauna Kerely was also in flying form, winning her age group while brother Oisin also impressed with a silver medal winning performance.

December 15th - Christmas Track Party 2011

An enthusiastic crowd turned out in fancy dress tonight for the club's annual track party. Despite the low temperatures no-one complained of being cold - quite the opposite! The club coaches laid on an exciting programme of track activities including an obstacle course and lots of novelty races before the grand draw was held in St. Patrick's Hall when, in true Christmas tradition, there was a prize for everyone in the audience. Congratulations to everyone who put in such a great effort on the night and to fancy dress competition winner Oisin McEntee!
